Bucs sign Milanovich

TAMPA -- The Bucs signed quarterback Scott Milanovich to a one-year deal, but that does not rule out the possibility of the team signing a veteran quarterback after June1.

The Bucs have four quarterbacks on their roster: starter Shaun King, backup Eric Zeier, rookie Joe Hamilton and Milanovich. The team typically takes four into training camp and carries three on the regular-season roster.

But neither coach Tony Dungy nor general manager Rich McKay has ruled out picking up a veteran this summer.

Signing bonuses are accelerated to future seasons if a player is released after June1, and a number of veteran quarterbacks might come free, including Minnesota's Randall Cunningham and Chicago's Shane Matthews.

Milanovich's deal is part of the restricted free-agent process that allows a player's team to match any offers. He is the second restricted free agent in four days to sign a deal with the Bucs. Guard Frank Middleton signed a one-year deal Friday. Milanovich, Middleton, cornerback Ronde Barber, center Kevin Dogins, tight end Patrick Hape, safety Damien Robinson and cornerback Floyd Young were restricted free agents entering the off-season and were tendered offers. Now that the signing period is over, the Bucs will make good on the tenders.

Milanovich is playing for the Berlin Thunder in NFL Europe, backing up former Florida and Marshall quarterback Eric Kresser. In his past two games, Milanovich has received significant playing time. He directed one come-from-behind win and has completed 16 of 33 for 189 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions.
