Muriel Naomi Hansen Nelson, born May 4, 1901, celebrated her 100th birthday on Friday.

Muriel was born in Audubon, Iowa, to Christopher Wilhelm Hansen and Sadie Berniece Armstrong. Mrs. Nelson moved to St. Petersburg from Minneapolis in 1971, and after the death of her husband in 1972, she decided she wanted to stay busy.

Mrs. Nelson started work as a Kelly Girl and was placed doing temporary work in the personnel office at Aircraft Porous Media. Her work ethic led the firm to make her position full time, and at the age of 72 she became assistant personnel director.

She has won numerous state and county awards as "the oldest worker" and has been the subject of remarks entered in the Congressional Record dealing with the positive role of the elderly in the workplace.

She retired in 1990 at the age of 89.
