AchieversBy Times staff writer © St. Petersburg Times, published May 9, 2001 Students' water posters win statewide contestTwo St. Petersburg students were statewide winners in the 14th annual Drop Savers Water Conservation poster contest. The competition, open to students in kindergarten through fifth grade, was part of Florida's observance of National Drinking Water Week, which began Sunday and continues through Saturday. Addy Kolonick from Westgate Elementary School won first place in the kindergarten-Grade 1 category. Shelby Begany from Bay Point Elementary School won first place in the fourth- and fifth-grade category. Addy and Shelby were first-place winners in St. Petersburg's regional competition in April. Other first-, second- and third-place Pinellas County winners were: Julie Guerrieri, Jessica Lanning and Kelsey Egan, St. Petersburg Christian School; Sidney Sue Howard, Lutheran Church of the Cross; Sara Kesneck, Holy Family Catholic School; Sean Wall, Grace Lutheran School; and Natasha M. Bell, Campbell Park Elementary School. Four win essay contest about smoking in societyFour St. Petersburg students were winners of a Family Resources-sponsored essay contest addressing the issue of smoking in society. Eve Epstein and Jacquelyn Leigh Bowers, St. Petersburg High School; Kevin Parkhurst, John Hopkins Middle School; and Audrey Warfield, Tyrone Middle School, wrote on the topic, "Do You Agree or Disagree That We Should Have a Smoke-free Society?" The St. Petersburg students' essays were chosen from among 142 entries from area high schools and middle schools.
