SOUTH PASADENA -- Wayne C. Barr, at 63 making his first run at public office, routed veteran politician Lou Ippolito in a special election Tuesday and won a seat on the City Commission.

"I feel a lot of people worked very hard to make this happen," said Barr, who received 739 of the 1,069 votes."I graciously accept the vote and the office."

Barr, who is retired as an executive with Trans World Airlines, will serve the 22 months remaining on the term of Commissioner Al Edmiston, who died in February.

Ippolito suffered his third consecutive election defeat. He was first elected a commissioner in 1993 and served two terms but lost a re-election bid last year and finished third in a March election to fill two commission seats.
