NEW PORT RICHEY -- Moving Our Lady Queen of Peace Church from Washington Street to Sims Park is going to cost more than was originally planned.
City council members initially approved spending up to $55,000 to move the church, and contractors estimated the job would cost $44,680. But relocating street lights and power lines could cost another $16,342. And removing and pruning the trees in the proposed moving path could cost up to $3,500. County Commissioners granted the city $30,000 for the project. The city would pay for the balance of the relocation costs. The city had applied for Community Block Development Grant funds but was denied. The city is applying for state grants for the restoration. The West Pasco Historical Society is spearheading the fundraising effort to restore the church once it is moved and has raised about $4,800 so far.
At a work session Tuesday evening, City Manager Gerald Seeber asked council members whether they would direct city staff to proceed, given the additional costs. They indicated that they wanted to, although they asked moving contractors to explore other, less costly routes.
