PHI THETA KAPPA BRINGS HOME HALLMARK AWARDS: Central Florida Community College was represented by 11 members of the Ocala campus Kappa Nu chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society at the recent 83rd International PTK Convention in Denver, Colo. They competed with 430 chapters for Hallmark Awards. The awards recognize excellence in programs and projects that promote the Phi Theta Kappa hallmarks of scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship.

The awards recognize excellence in programs and projects that promote the Phi Theta Kappa hallmarks of scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship.

President Missy Weir received one of 25 Distinguished Chapter President Awards. Kappa Nu Corresponding Secretary Amanda Winkler received one of 25 Distinguished Chapter Officer Awards. The chapter was recognized as a "Top 100" chapter, having increased its membership 20 percent more than last year.

Chapter adviser Dr. Tom Weaver received one of 30 Continued Excellence Awards for Advisers. Kim Kodak won a $500 cash scholarship and Nancy Galzarano received a $250 scholarship.

CFCC NEWSPAPER WINS AWARDS: Central Florida Community College's Patriot Press student newspaper staff recently received recognition from Florida Leader magazine. The fall 2000 and spring 2001 semester issues were cited for Honorable Mention in the Best Community College Newspapers category.

The fall and spring term 2000 Patriot Press staffs received a first place award from the American Scholastic Press Association, an organization that rates more than 2,000 high school, college and university publications.

Spring term 2001 staff members are: Brian Stanton, editor; Cara Ackroyd, Citrus editor; Belen Barquet, managing editor; Ron Araujo, photographer; Chris Schroeder, business manager; Ivan Williams, arts and graphics editor; Atwanya Snowden and Christina McClain, assignment editors; Greg Vickers, sports editor; Candice Barrentine and LeeAnn Huntoon, copy editors; and Kenya Lee, Toccara Shaw, Jesse Stevenson, Josh Allan, Mark Graysom and Lisa Ellison.

Fall term 2000 staff members were: Mercy Sanchez, editor; Betsy TeHew, co-editor; Kim Bollinger, Citrus editor; Atwanya Snowden, sports editor; Brian Stanton, features editor; Shelley Beckett, assignment editor; Chaniene Jones, ad manager; Kenya Lee, assistant ad manager; Lori Fann and Ivan Williams, photographers; and Chelsea Bauer, Christina McClain, Brian Losalzo, Becky Holmes, Paul Nedelisky, Chris Schroeder, Landrea Wells and Cara Ackroyd.

Spring term 2000 staff members were: Rob Campbell, editor; Mercy Sanchez and Richard Braender, managing editors; Diane Perrine, copy editor; Angela Collins, sports editor; Scott Mason, features editor; Chaniene Jones, business manager; Kim Bollinger, Citrus editor; and Tofoya Coe, Marie Chipley, Tamara Rohey, Brian Stanton and Cari Vanderhaar.

CFCC STUDENT WINS SCHOLARSHIP: Central Florida Community College student Donna Blaes won one of two Teachers of Accounting at Two-Year Colleges scholarships. She competed with many applicants from across the United States. Two $500 scholarships are awarded each year to students who have committed to careers in accounting. Scholarship applicants must have completed 30 college credits, six of which must be in accounting courses; have a minimum 3.3 grade point average overall and 3.5 in accounting courses; be currently attending a two-year school; be recommended by an accounting faculty member; and complete and mail the scholarship application and supporting documentation, including an essay dealing with a case study and a self-description.

STUDENTS OF THE MONTH: West Citrus Elks and Crystal River High School have announced the April Students of the Month, Courtenay Ryals and Christopher Glenn.

Courtenay, 17, has been active in varsity softball, as student council secretary/treasurer, yearbook co-editor, Enhancement Council member, academic team member, and as a full-time dual enrollment student. She has more than 145 hours of community service, was nominated for Wendy's High School Heisman, was featured in Outstanding Students of America and in the U.S. Achievement Academy Yearbook, was chosen an All-American scholar, Tulane University Distinguished Scholar and was voted by the senior class as most likely to succeed. She has a weighted grade point average of 4.58 and plans to attend Clemson University to study medicine. Courtenay is the daughter of Charlotte and Bill Ryals of Homosassa.

Christopher, 18, has been active in varsity swimming and wrestling, in the Spanish Club as vice president, Interact Club and Young Marines, as a Navy JROTC officer and academic team commander, as a Navy JROTC operations officer, with the ROTC drill team, and with 200+

hours at the Crystal River Indian Mounds Park. He was a Boy's State delegate, is a Navy JROTC Leadership Academy graduate, is in National Honor Society, has received the American Legion Scholastic Excellence Award, is American Red Cross certified in CPR and first aid, was a Dreamer and Doer Award winner and is a full-time dual enrollment student. Christopher has a 4.4 grade point average and plans to attend the U.S. Naval Academy. He is the son of Paul and Julie Glenn of Dunnellon.

CHS AIR FORCE ROTC AWARDS: The Citrus High School Air Force ROTC recently held its end of the year banquet and distributed the following awards.
