AUBURNDALE -- Freshman Angel Shamblin hurled a no-hitter in Hollywood Christian's 2-0 victory over Lafayette in the Class 2A semifinals.
After Samantha Smith reached on an error with one out in the first inning, Shamblin retired the final 20 batters. She finished with 12 strikeouts.
Meanwhile, Michelle Grinage pitched a one-hitter in Orlando Lake Highland's 6-0 win over Wewakitchka in the other Class 2A semifinal.
The sophomore right-hander struck out 12 while allowing only Laura Husband's third-inning single. She did not walk a batter.
STRIKEOUT QUEEN: Simply putting the ball in play has been an accomplishment against Central Ocoee Florida Christian pitcher Leah Barth the past four years.
Through the end of the district tournament, the senior had struck out 1,267 and tossed eight perfect games, 15 no-hitters, 23 one-hitters and 52 shutouts while compiling a 104-16 career record.
BLUE DEVILS BREAKDOWN: Five Green Cove Springs Clay players will receive college scholarships next season.
Ashley Black and Angela Coleman signed with Pasco-Her- nando Community College. Kristen Ervin (Gulf Coast Community College), Cindy Hudgins (North Florida) and Christina Thompson (Florida Atlantic) also have committed. Black, Hudgins and Thompson will play in the FACA All-Star Softball Classic May 18-19 at Winter Park Trinity Prep High.
MATT'S MILESTONE: Clay coach Matt Lewis reached the 100-win plateau earlier this season. Entering Wednesday's game, Lewis is 106-50 in four years with the Blue Devils, including 24-9 this season.
