    Greek food, fun

The restauranteurs of Tarpon Springs will offer a plethora of authentic Greek entrees, side dishes and desserts at the Taste of Tarpon 2001 Festival from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday along Dodecanese Boulevard near the historic sponge docks. But baklava is just the start of this festival. In addition to ethnic food, there will be arts and crafts, Greek and American bands and dancing in the street. There is no admission charge. For information, call (727) 937-3514.

    A historic performance

Nearly forgotten for almost a century, the operetta Alice and the Eight Princesses will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. May 23 at the Tarpon Springs Performing Arts Center, 324 Pine St. Last performed in 1905, it will be presented in the style of a radio broadcast circa 1940, combining upbeat music by Victor Herbert, libretto by Glen MacDonough and a gag-filled script. Performing the operetta will be a cast of 20 from the Century Opera Company, which evolved from the Tarpon Operetta Company founded 13 years ago, and casting students from local elementary schools. Both children and adults will perform Alice and the Eight Princesses. Tickets cost $8 for center members, and $6 for students. For information, call (727) 942-5605.
