Three hit in random gunfire
By JOE HUMPHREY © St. Petersburg Times, published May 13, 2000 TAMPA -- One man was critically injured and two teenagers slightly injured, when they became random targets for a man firing a gun from a blue truck as he drove along Howard Avenue early Friday, authorities said. Gregory Farr Harris, 34, was shot in the chest and remained in critical condition Friday at St. Joseph's Hospital, authorities said. Maurice Gordon, 16, and Kentawn Winbush, 15, were treated and released from Tampa General Hospital. A bullet grazed Gordon's head and a bullet hit Winbush in the hand, police said. Police said the victims were walking on Howard at different locations when the gunman drove down the street, firing as he came upon each victim. Gordon, who lives in west Tampa near Howard Avenue and Interstate 275, said he was walking to the Texaco station just north of I-275 about 3 a.m. Friday when he saw a man standing near a truck yelling and brandishing a baseball bat. Gordon shrugged it off and continued into the store, where he bought a soda, potato chips and a bag of M&Ms. He left the store and began heading home. That's when he heard a loud pop. "I thought it was a busted tire," Gordon said. Gordon said the gunman took five shots at him. One bullet grazed the right side of his head. A few inches closer, he said, and "I would have been dead." He was taken to Tampa General Hospital by friends and was given 13 staples to close a gash. "He hit me from the back while I was running," Gordon said. He said the gunman was the same person he had seen standing near the truck minutes earlier. Winbush, who was hit in the hand, also was taken to the hospital by friends. Tampa Fire Rescue paramedics found Harris at Howard Avenue and Spruce Street. The victims were shot in a four-block area on Howard Avenue between Spruce and Green streets. The victims were unable to give police a detailed description of the man, the type of gun used or the truck. - Joe Humphrey can be reached at 226-3403 or humphrey@sptimes.com
