HOLIDAY -- A 61-year-old man suffered serious burns while working on his car Friday evening, according to Pasco County Fire-Rescue District Chief Doug Drape.

The man, who was not identified, was working on the car at 1852 Speck Drive about 5:25 p.m. when the car apparently backfired, producing a flash of flame, Drape said. The man suffered second-degree burns over 30 percent of his body, including the face, back, and neck, Drape said.

The man was flown by helicopter to the burn ward at Tampa General Hospital. Drape said the injuries were extremely painful but did not appear life-threatening.
