Snackin' with 'N Sync
'N Sync's image is everywhere these days, even on snack boxes. The guys are the first entertainers to be featured on Brach's Hot Hits fruit snacks. Some of the snacks are shaped like the 'N Sync logo, and some are juice-filled hearts decorated with each guy's name. Inside each box is a replica backstage pass. The snacks sell for $2.49 per box.
She's cooking smart
Christina Banks, a seventh-grader at Keswick Christian School in St. Petersburg, was selected as one of five finalists in a nationwide search for the top "chef in the making" as part of Tyson Foods Now You're Cooking Smart contest. Christina, 12, was chosen based on a comical video submission which featured her Chicken Delight recipe (it's chicken, veggies and cream cheese in a pocket made of crescent rolls) and starred her live pet chicken, Peepers. Later this month, she and four other finalists will go to New York to participate in a national chicken cook-off (presumably without Peepers). The grand prize winner will receive a $10,000 scholarship.
Get safe on wheels
The 2001 Rally for Bike Safety, which helps kids of all ages learn how to ride bikes and scooters responsibly, will rev up in the parking lots of more than 800 Wal-Marts throughout the country. Many stores will hold the rally from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, but check with your local store for its date and time. At the free event, kids will learn basic safety and helmet fitting tips as well as instructions on checking brakes and gears. A safety course allows kids to encounter on-bike situations including avoiding hazards and obeying traffic rules.
Big bucks for big bubbles
The second annual Dubble Bubble National Bubble Blowing Contest will be take place at Wal-Mart stores nationwide May 26 at 11 a.m. The contest challenges kids 12 and younger to blow the biggest bubble-gum bubble. The grand prize winner receives a $10,000 savings bond, and five runners-up receive $5,000 savings bonds. Last year's winner was a local kid: Adam Feagley of Hudson. His champion bubble was 17 inches! Call your local Wal-Mart to verify whether it is participating in the contest.
Sounds good, Seminole
Seminole Middle School smashed the competition at the All American Music Festival in Orlando last month. Band members brought back several first place and superior honors. The 22-member jazz band was named overall Grand Champion. It's even more of an amazing feat considering this was Seminole Middle's first competition against other schools' music groups.
