In the Old Salt's 14th annual TV John Trolling Tournament, this year's Master Angler award went to Sound Waves. The winning team consisted of Derrell McCrary (bonita, 8.82 pounds), Rob Buchner (grouper, 12.94, and Spanish mackerel, 2.96) and Jim Curry (king mackerel, 7.04) with Capt. Mark Ternes.

According to Ternes, by 10:15 a.m. Saturday, all the fish were in the boat. The team trolled near the Ten Fathom Wreck using hard-bodied lures and spoons to catch fish. Only artificial lures could be used in the tournament.

Category winners: Spanish mackerel, Venture's Jim Derosa, 3.80 pounds; grouper, Sound Waves' Buchner, 12.94; king mackerel, Lucky Four's Trae Sorensen, 20.08; bonita, Sound Waves' McCrary, 8.82.

Only one other team caught all four species of fish. Capt. Dave Zalewski's Indecision with teammates Paul Jenkins and son Jake managed to catch grouper (8.32), bonita (3.88), Spanish mackerel (1.24) and king mackerel (7.12). But their total weight was lower than Sound Waves'.

The tournament is named after the late "TV" John Zolovchik, who was Old Salt of the year in 1976. Zolocvhik's only method of fishing was trolling. The concept is simple: troll until you catch fish. There will be no stopping for bait, it won't be needed.
