Saint Leo gets invited to NCAA baseball tournament

No surprise -- Saint Leo is going to the NCAA Division II South Region tournament.

The Lions received official word Monday that they would meet the University of Tampa on Thursday at Baseball City in Davenport. The Lions, seeded No. 4, and the top-seeded Spartans (44-10) will be joined at the regional by No. 2 Florida Southern (45-11) and No. 3 Gardner-Webb (41-19), who will meet in the other game.

Though the official word sealed their bid, the Lions (37-17) finished with a No. 4 ranking in the South Region, unofficially assuring them a spot in the regional for the second year in a row. It is the first time a Saint Leo team has made consecutive NCAA appearances.

Last year, Saint Leo lost to Carson-Newman (Tenn.) in the regional final. It also made appearances in 1971, '78 and '96.
