Bulls win tourney opener
METAIRIE, La. -- South Florida scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat Louisville 10-5 in the first round of the C-USA Tournament on Wednesday.
Daniel Boyd, a first-team All-C-USA selection for the second consecutive season, hit a line drive past third baseman Mike Budak to score Mike Macaluso and Ben Drawdy. Budak was given an error and all five runs in the inning were unearned.
The Bulls (29-27) face Southern Miss (26-30) in a winner's bracket game at 5 p.m. today.
ALSO: Chad Rogers and Anthony Rawson held Houston to four hits as seventh-seeded Southern Miss beat the second-seeded Cougars 6-2. ... Barrett Smith hit a home run and drove in four runs as fifth-seeded Memphis beat fourth-seeded Cincinnati 8-5. ... Today, Memphis (33-22) plays the Tulane-Charlotte winner, and Cincinnati (34-23) faces the loser in an elimination game. Houston (29-27) faces Louisville.
FSU 11, N.C. STATE 5: Florida State's seven-run eighth inning was at times painful to watch -- even for the Seminoles.
"You kind of have to feel bad," said first baseman Ryan Barthelemy, who had two hits in the inning in the 'Noles' opener in Fort Mill, S.C.
The rally was helped by two hit batters and three of the Wolfpack's season-high seven errors. "But we'll take the runs they give us," Barthelemy said.
Karl Jernigan, who broke a 3-3 tie with a homer in the sixth, was hit by a pitch with bases loaded by reliever Josh Miller for the winning run.
The Seminoles (41-15) take on defending ACC tournament champion Georgia Tech today.
ALSO: Jon Benick had a three-run homer and Dan Street threw a six-hitter as No. 7 seed Virginia, which lost three games to Clemson this past weekend, beat the second-seeded Tigers 7-3. ... Bryan Prince had a two-run homer and Richard Lewis tied a tournament record by going 5-for-5 in No. 4 Georgia Tech's 16-2 victory against No. 5 Duke. ... Today, Duke (23-32) faces N.C. State (28-28) in an elimination game.
LSU 10, FLORIDA 0: Jason Scobie allowed three hits as the Tigers won in seven innings in Hoover, Ala., in a game ended by the league's 10-run mercy rule.
Coach Andy Lopez believes the Gators need a strong tournament showing to make an NCAA regional, but UF gave up nine runs with two outs.
LSU (38-18-1) scored seven runs with two outs in the second inning to chase Florida starter Keith Brice, including Mike Pontenot's three-run home run.
No. 7 seed Florida (33-24) meets Tennessee in an elimination game today.
ALSO: Carl Lafferty and Clint Farrar drove in three runs each as No. 6 seed Mississippi beat No. 3 seed Tennessee 17-6. The Rebels face LSU in the winner's bracket today.
