If you're interested at all in local theater -- and you should be, because it's better than 90 percent of what's on TV -- May to September is the high season. Summer stock.

Local and regional theaters across the country do remarkable work, but if you're traveling, the problem is finding out where the theaters are, and what's on their schedule.

Problem solved. The americantheaterweb.com site, founded by Andy Propst in 1998, provides links to about 2,000 theaters. But it's more than that. You can find theaters, find shows, use chat rooms and even call/ message boards, where you can review a performance you've seen.

As the site admits, this is a work in progress. There are plans for a special section devoted to younger performing artists, and a section in which you can buy tickets to the performance you want. Any fan of the performing arts will appreciate this site; even if you're not, it's worth a peek.
