    Woman hit in face with bottle during argument

    CLEARWATER -- A 31-year-old woman was taken by helicopter to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg on Thursday night after being hit in the face with a bottle during an argument, Clearwater police reported.

    Meredith Valdez, 1450 S Greenwood Ave., No. 506, lost teeth when she was struck by the bottle, police said. She was treated at the hospital and released.

    Police said Valdez was in the area of Lasalle Street and N Greenwood Avenue when she began arguing with a man who then threw the bottle.

    No arrests were reported Friday.

    54-year-old arrested in man's stabbing

    CLEARWATER -- A 54-year-old man was arrested Friday morning in connection with a May 11 stabbing.

    Daniel Benny Miller, 14091/2 Pennsylvania Ave., was charged with aggravated battery in connection with the incident, which occurred about 2:15 a.m. May 11 at 1107 Tangerine St., police said.

    Miller is accused of stabbing Tony Bennett, 42, of 700 Jefferson Ave. N after the two got into an argument, police said.

    Bennett, who suffered a 3-inch cut, drove home on his bike, then called police. He was taken by helicopter to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

    The hospital has no record of Bennett being admitted.

    Woman, 49, is indicted in Social Security scheme

    TAMPA -- A Clearwater woman was one of six people indicted by a grand jury Thursday in connection with six schemes to defraud Social Security.

    Daisy Franklin, 49, is charged with one count of theft of more than $19,000 from the Social Security Administration, one count of making a false statement within the executive branch of the U.S. government and one count of wrongful conversion of Social Security supplemental income benefit payments. She had been collecting those payments on behalf of her son, officials with the U.S. Attorney's Office in Tampa reported.

    If convicted, Franklin faces up to 20 years in prison and $750,000 in fines.

    Others charged Thursday with defrauding Social Security are: Johnnie Mae Franklin, 59, of Lakeland; Lelia Johnson, 62, of Wauchula; Rosemarie Gulliver, 56, of Brooksville; Edward Floyd Nixon, 51, of St. Petersburg; and Daisy Dell, 54, of Tampa.
