Man arrested, charged with DUI after chase

PORT RICHEY -- A speeding driver was arrested early Saturday morning after a short chase on U.S. 19, deputies said.

James Leo Wright, 54, of 7103 Daggert Ter. in New Port Richey, was charged with driving under the influence and felony fleeing to elude, deputies said.

About 2:30 a.m., Wright was clocked at 75 miles per hour north on U.S. 19 near Jasmine Boulevard, deputies said.

The speed limit is 45 miles per hour.

He did not stop for a pursuing deputy until the car in front of him stopped near Beacon Woods Drive, deputies said.

After getting out of his car, Wright was visibly drunk and a Breathalyzer showed he had a .152 blood alcohol level, nearly twice the legal limit.

Wright was scheduled to be released on his own recognizance Saturday from county jail in Land O'Lakes.

Father hit his son with a bat, deputies say

HUDSON -- A 48-year-old man was arrested Friday after admitting he hit his son with a baseball bat, Pasco County sheriff's deputies said.

Galveston Witherspoon of 8510-6 Dandelion St. was charged with child abuse, deputies said. They did not release the boy's age.

Deputies came to the man's house Wednesday to investigate a child abuse allegation, but the son had fled the house to get away from his father.

During a Friday interview with deputies, Witherspoon admitted to hitting his son both with the bat and his forearm, deputies said.

Witherspoon was being held Saturday at county jail in Land O'Lakes in lieu of $5,000 bail.
