USF advances in softball

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- South Florida advanced to the final day of the region softball tournament, defeating No. 1 seed Alabama 3-2 on Saturday. The Bulls must beat Michigan twice today.

USF scored three in the fourth on two hits, including Cindy Turek's two-run double, and one error. Turek also made a key defensive play, getting a forceout during a seventh-inning Alabama rally.

Courtney Lewellen had the Bulls' other RBI.

FSU 2, FAU 0: The Seminoles advanced to today's region championship in Tallahassee. FSU lost 1-0 earlier Saturday on a seventh-inning squeeze bunt to Cal, its opponent today. The Seminoles are 0-5 all-time against the Bears, scoring one run. Against FAU, Leslie Malerich pitched a two-hitter.

Delay likely in Black trial

GAINESVILLE -- A Miami attorney representing indicted sports agent Tank Black in a multimillion-dollar federal fraud case has been granted permission to withdraw, likely delaying Black's May 29 trial date. Joseph Beeler had sought to be excused citing a conflict of interest. He had also complained about the growing cost. Black is accused of cheating professional athletes out of about $13-million by scheming to funnel money to a title loan company.

Tennis

MEN: Alex Kim, top-seeded Stanford's No. 1 player, retired with cramps during an early-afternoon rain delay, but Stanford advanced 4-1 against Pepperdine. In other matches, Georgia beat California 4-0, Tennessee beat South Alabama 4-0, Texas A&M beat LSU 4-1 and TCU beat Southern Cal 4-2. More rain in the late afternoon interrupted play and UCLA vs. Washington and SMU vs. Mississippi State were rescheduled for 1 p.m. today. Quarterfinal matches are scheduled for Monday and the tournament finals will be Wednesday instead of Tuesday.

WOMEN: Team semifinal play was suspended because of rain with Georgia and Vanderbilt tied at one doubles match victory apiece. The semifinal between Stanford and Florida was rained out. Both matches are scheduled for 9 this morning and the championship will be at 10 a.m. Monday.

Football

SYRACUSE: Quarterback Madei Williams, a one-time heir apparent to Donovan McNabb, will take his final year of eligibility to Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. The fifth-year senior was behind Troy Nunes and R.J. Anderson.

MOTOR CITY BOWL: The game in Pontiac, Mich., featuring teams from the Mid-American Conference and Conference USA, will be played at noon Dec. 29, moving to Saturday for the first time.

Basketball

CINCINNATI: Sophomore center Donald Little has been kicked off the team for conduct detrimental to the program. He led the Bearcats in blocked shots with 68.

N.C. STATE: Larry Hunter, fired as Ohio University's coach, will be an assistant at North Carolina State.
