Welsh literary fest features ClintonBy Times staff writer © St. Petersburg Times, published May 20, 2001 HAY ON WYE, Wales -- This village of 1,300 people and 39 bookstores swells each year to about 50,000 during the 10 days of May and early June when it holds its literary festival. Crowds at least that size are expected this month with a full roster of literary lights, as well as a concert by Irish singer Van Morrison and a lecture by former President Bill Clinton. The Clinton event on Saturday is sold out, according to festival organizers. Writers who will appear during the festival, Friday through June 3, include Frank McCourt, the Irish-American author of Angela's Ashes; Margaret Atwood, the Canadian author of The Handmaid's Tale; Jan Morris, the famed travel writer who is a native of Wales and still lives here; and feminist author Germaine Greer.
