A man hit by a freight train Friday in Ridge Manor remained in critical condition Saturday at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa.
Authorities were searching for his identity.
Hernando County sheriff's officials suspected the man is a transient who may have been trying to commit suicide by sitting on the tracks as the 4,000-ton train approached about 12:15 p.m.
Described as a black man in his 50s, he was carrying a backpack but no identification when the train slammed into him just south of State Road 50 and east of U.S. 301.
