LARGO -- Police are looking for the driver of a sport utility vehicle that struck and killed a bicyclist Friday night at Ulmerton and Belcher roads.

The bicyclist, Stephen Davis Gunter, 39, of 2247 Coral Way, Apt. C in Largo, was riding his bicycle on his way to meet his fiancee and friends.

Shortly after 11 p.m. on Friday night, police said, Gunter was riding east on Belcher Road just north of Ulmerton Road when the SUV made a left turn from Ulmerton onto Belcher at a high speed, possibly against the red light. The SUV struck Gunter, then drove off.

The driver of the SUV fled northbound on Belcher Road. Gunter was transported to Largo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 11:50 p.m.

Witnesses described the vehicle as a late 1990s model, two-tone maroon and grey or silver SUV.

"The vehicle will definitely have left front end damage," Largo police Lt. Michelle Y. Smith said.

Anyone with information about the vehicle or the driver are asked to contact the Largo Police Department at (727) 587-6730.
