Saddlebrook is ranked state's best in Class A
By KEVIN KELLY © St. Petersburg Times, published May 23, 2000 Saddlebrook was ranked the state's top Class A school in the 2000 Dodge Sunshine Cup FHSAA Floyd E. Lay All-Sports Awards points standings released Monday. The Wesley Chapel private academy was joined by four other North Suncoast schools that placed in the top 10 in boys and girls categories. Citrus placed fifth in the Class 4A boys standings, Land O'Lakes finished seventh in the Class 5A boys standings, Seven Rivers Christian of Lecanto also was seventh in Class A boys, and Lecanto placed ninth in the Class 4A girls standings. Points are awarded based on a school's finish in FHSAA State Series competition. The top 32 places are scored in each sport. Saddlebrook, which competes in just tennis and golf, finished 8.5 points ahead of South Daytona Warner Christian in Class A. The Spartans finished 26 points behind Central Florida Christian in the girls standings and eighth in the boys standings, 58 points behind first-place Warner Christian of South Daytona. Saddlebrook won the Class A girls golf championship while its boys golf team finished third in its district. The Spartans boys and girls tennis teams both advanced to the Class A state championships where they finished second and fourth respectively. Saddlebrook will be honored at the FHSAA Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Awards Banquet on June 15 at the Wyndham Westshore Hotel in Tampa.
