City plans to move offending columns
By Times staff writer © St. Petersburg Times, published May 23, 2001 CRYSTAL RIVER -- They must weigh a ton, these concrete columns outside City Hall. They look even bigger on their side, which is not where they are supposed to be but exactly how they lay Tuesday -- the victim of, depending on your point of view, an uncharitable zoning board or a drowsy city official. The columns, part of a new sign for City Hall, were ripped up Tuesday morning, roughly one month after the building inspector put the kibosh on the project. Lew Chandler determined that one of the columns was too close to the sidewalk, a violation of the 5-foot setback. He also cited the city for working without a permit -- bold moves from a man only a few days on the job. John Lettow, assistant public works director, called the mistake an "oversight" and appealed to the Zoning Board of Adjustment. "I didn't feel I'd have a problem," he said Tuesday from his office. No luck. The ZBA tabled the request but not before making its opinion clear. "We told him to come back with a better solution," board member Ann Treanor said. "We treated the city the same as we would treat any citizen." Rather than fight, Lettow says he will move the sign back. "Yes," he said, "we're not different and we should set an example." © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • St. Petersburg Times
