Letters to the EditorsNewspaper is good watchdog of the police
© St. Petersburg Times, published May 23, 2001 Editor: Your article on the corralling of escapees shed some more light on the antics of the Citrus County Sheriff's Office. I, like Kevin McCurdy, do not understand police tactics either. The people who rely on the police for their safety and well being should be made aware, so when dealing with the police we know what to expect. A friend of mine was stopped for DUI and blew sober but was arrested anyhow, supposedly for his attitude. I've been of the opinion that we need a watchdog to keep tabs on the police and you are doing a fine job. Newspapers seem to be what keeps the cops fairly in line and I thank you for the job you're doing. It's also good that you print the names of the juvenile delinquents -- it may save a life sometime; confidentiality seems to be more important than public safety. Thanks again for keeping us informed. We need police protection, we do not need or want a police state.
Nursing home staffers praised for their caringEditor: In celebration of National Nursing Home Week, I am prompted to write this commendation especially as nursing homes are receiving such heavy scrutiny. I have both of my elderly parents residing at Brentwood Health Care Center in Lecanto. While no one really wants to live in a nursing home, it is vitally necessary for some to do so, as they require more care than their families can give. While no nursing home is perfect and many are deplorable, Brentwood is one of the best and its caring staff is to be commended. No nursing home today has enough staff to meet all the needs of its residents, something that Rep. Nancy Argenziano is fighting to rectify in the Florida Legislature. This makes the outstanding aides, nurses, and administrators at Brentwood shine even more. They don't come any better than CNAs Glenda Carte, Jane Marsh, Juanita Clark and Craig Swartz, who put patient comfort above all else. Nurse Mary Keibler goes out of her way to work with families to meet the needs of residents and always with a smile. Administrator Vicky Huskey, who also works the floor part-time, goes above and beyond the call of duty to help meet the residents' needs, even to scrubbing a bathroom when short of help. The dietary staff has bent over backward to try to satisfy residents' likes and dislikes. In emergencies, LPN Christina Pleskovich is as cool a head as one could ask for. The staff turnover at Brentwood is very low, which speaks for itself. We are fortunate in Citrus County to have a facility with such a caring staff as Brentwood. Thank you Brentwood staff for all you do to meet the needs of my parents.
