Third-grader earns award for essay on non-violence

Ke'Anthony A. Byrd, a third-grade student at Mount Vernon Elementary, is a national winner in the 10th annual Peace Education Awards. His essay about peace and non-violence tied for third place in the K-3 category.

Mount Vernon third-grader D.J. Leggon and Mount Vernon second-grader Jacqueze Young won national honorable mentions for their essays.

The Peace Education Awards project is coordinated by the the Radiance Technique International Association Committed to Radiant Peace, a not-for-profit organization based in St. Petersburg. The organization drew entries from more than 6,500 students and teachers nationwide.

Third-grader wins 3-county poster contest

Jami Marie Hoolihan won first place in a Big Brothers Big Sisters poster contest, third- through fifth-grade category, for Pasco, Pinellas and Hillsborough counties. This is the second consecutive year she has won a trophy, a $50 savings bond, a blue ribbon and dinner for her family.

Jami is a third-grade student at Skyview Elementary and the daughter of Michelle Hoolihan of Pinellas Park.

State Farm awards scholarship to Auburn-bound student

Rachel Mallory Korth, daughter of Susan and Kevin Korth of St. Pete Beach, is one of 100 State Farm Companies Foundation scholarship recipients nationwide. The award recognizes sons or daughters of State Farm agents, employees or retirees for their academic excellence and leadership potential.

Rachel is a 2001 graduate of St. Petersburg Catholic High School. She plans to major in education at Auburn University.

Hospital awards volunteers $1,000 Shoemaker scholarships

All Children's Hospital has awarded $1,000 Frances Shoemaker scholarships to two St. Petersburg students.

Chanedra Mells, daughter of Deborah Mells of St. Petersburg, is a student at the Center for Wellness and Medical Professions at Boca Ciega High School. She has logged more than 320 hours since 1997 as a volunteer at St. Anthony's Hospital Resource Center and information desk and at the Ronald McDonald House.

Jennifer Black, daughter of Madeline and Dell Black of St. Petersburg, is a student at St. Petersburg Catholic High School. A volunteer at All Children's since 1997, she has worked more than 460 hours with the hospital's Child Life program and at the information desk.
