Summer job opportunities available for youth

Gibbs High School cafeteria, 850 34th St. S, St. Petersburg, will be the site for this year's WorkNet Pinellas career fair. WorkNet, a career-enhancing job placement network which, among other functions, will prescreen applicants for summer employment and also provide literature and information about potential employers

Museum offers free admission for veterans

The Florida International Museum, 100 Second St. N, St. Petersburg, will offer free admission to active military personnel and veterans Saturday through Monday in honor of Memorial Day.

The museum features a private exhibit of John F. Kennedy artifacts, and other exhibits including "The Cuban Missile Crisis: When the Cold War Got Hot" and "Countdown to Eternity," a collection of photos of the Civil Rights Movement and Dr. Martin Luther King.

Regular museum admission is $13.95 for adults, $12.95 for seniors and $5.95 for students for a day pass. For more information, call the museum at 1-800-777-9882.

Alzheimer's Association to hold dinner and auction

The Tampa Bay Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association will host the third annual "Memories in the Making" dinner and auction from 6-10:30 p.m. June 2 at the Belleview Biltmore Resort and Spa, 25 Belleview Blvd., Clearwater.

Art created by local Alzheimer's patients will be auctioned, with proceeds to benefit research and support services, including education, counseling, and respite care. The Tampa Bay Chapter is one of only six Alzheimer's Association chapters to participate in this program, which is designed to raise awareness and provide information about the disease. Tickets are $55 per person, $100 for patron seating, or $1000 for a benefactor's package, and may be obtained by calling (727) 578-2558 or 1-800-772-8672.

Non-profit groups can get grant-writing help

Pinellas and Hillsborough Grant Collaboratives will host a grant training conference, "Effective Grant Writing for Bridging Change," on June 7 and 8 at Armwood High School, 12000 U.S. 92, Seffner.

The event is designed to provide non-profit organizations with information and resources to gain funding through grant writing. Topics will include fundamentals of grant writing, locating funding and Internet resources, budgets, collaborations, and grant ethics.

The conference runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 7 and from 8 a.m. to noon June 8. The fee is $35 and includes breakfast on both days and lunch on June 7. To register, call (813) 495-7677.

Uhuru Movement to hold convention

The National People's Democratic Uhuru Movement's annual national convention, themed "Disenfranchised but Not Defeated: Black History in the Making," will be held Friday through Sunday at the Uhuru House, 1245 18th Ave. S, St. Petersburg. The convention runs from 6-10 p.m. Friday, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Workshops and panel discussions will include topics such as environmental racism, police containment vs. economic development, prisons, electoral politics, immigration and education. Hip-hop performances will accompany a panel on the role of this musical genre in the African-American community. The cost is $42 per person, and includes all three days of the convention and meals.
