CHOCACHATTI ELEMENTARY: The school's second-graders will present a Memorial Day celebration at 9:15 a.m. today in the school's Town Center. Activities include singing and dancing performances, plus the dedication of a school monument honoring Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine and Coast Guard veterans. In addition, the students are offering the public a chance to purchase brass name plates for $10 that will be placed on the monument. For information, call Melinda Morgan at 797-7067.

NEWSMAKERS:

Three Hernando County high school seniors were recently chosen to receive admission appointments to U.S. military academies. The students, nominated for appointment by U.S. Rep. Karen Thurman, were chosen because of their exceptional performances in academics, leadership and community service.

The nominees include:

Tina Frazier of Brooksville, who is graduating from Hernando High School. She will be attending the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.

Justin Michael Matejka of Spring Hill, who is graduating from Springstead High School. He will be attending the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, N.Y.

Clinton Edward Pierce of Spring Hill, who is graduating from Springstead High School. He will be attending the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.

The Hernando Fair Association recently awarded $500 scholarships to two Hernando County graduates:

John Andrew Korycki, a home-schooled graduate, is enrolled at Central Florida Community College and plans to continue his studies in agriculture and forestry.

Lucas Rasper is a graduating senior from Hernando High and plans to study environmental science at the University of South Florida.

Central High School senior Michael J. Flateau recently graduated from Pasco-Hernando Community College as a dual-enrollment student. In addition, Michael, who has been named Central's valedictorian, received the prestigious "highest honors" award for maintaining a perfect 4.0 grade-point average. He will attend the Florida State University School of Music this fall as a dual major in the honors program.
