Local duo named state's best

Seminole's Casey Kotchman and Sickles' Julie Henneke have been named Florida's Mr. Baseball and Miss Softball.

Kotchman, a first baseman who helped lead the Warhawks to the Class 5A state title and a No. 1 national ranking by Baseball America, hit .402 with 5 home runs, 11 doubles, 41 runs, 29 RBI, a .581 on-base percentage and a .743 slugging average.

Marianna's Jeff Mathis (the 3A player of the year) was second in the balloting, and Gaither's Ryan Anderson (6A) was third.

Quincy Munroe's Donnie Vickers (A), Blountstown's Eric Johnson (2A) and Jacksonville Bishop Kenny's A.J. Johnson (4A) also were on the ballot.

Henneke led the Gryphons to the 6A state title, the first state title in the school's four-year existence. Henneke went 18-4 with 180 strikeouts and a 0.29 ERA while also hitting .427 with 10 RBI.

She outpolled Tallahassee Leon's Erin Horn (5A), Sebastian River's Ashley Courtney (4A), Madison County's Chatori Moore (3A), Port St. Joe's Bonnie Belin (2A) and Princeton Christian's Jessica Matthews (A).

The winners from all sports for the 2000-2001 school year will be honored at a banquet June 23 at SeaWorld Orlando.
