Fast track to the '40s
Forget the Internet. The magic of an earlier medium is the concept behind the Florida Orchestra's final pops program of the season. Radio Days features the Minnesota-based vocal group Five by Design, pictured here. The program covers 1940s hits from Chattanooga Choo Choo to Mairzy Doats, sung in the style of groups like the Modernaires. Resident conductor Thomas Wilkins is on the podium. Above from left, Terrence Niska, Kurt Niska, Catherine Scott, Michael Swedberg and Lorie Carpenter-Niska.
Performances are today at Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg, Friday at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater and Saturday at Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center in Tampa, all at 8 p.m. Tickets: $20-$38. (813) 286-2403.
Asolo's got 'Art'
French playwright Yasmina Reza struck pay dirt when she wrote about what happens among three friends when one of them buys a modern painting. Art became a phenomenon when it opened in 1996 in London, with casts that have included the starry likes of Tom Courtenay, Albert Finney, Stacey Keach, Judd Hirsch and George Segal. The London production is now on its 18th cast.
Art went on to win the Tony Award for best play, though it had a modest run on Broadway. Now it is making the rounds of regional theaters and opens this weekend at the Asolo in Sarasota. Bradford Wallace, from left, David Breitbarth and Douglas Jones play the friends, directed by Gil Lazier. The show, performed in the Asolo's Cook Theatre, opens Saturday and runs through July 1. Tickets: $27 and 29. (941) 351-8000 or toll-free 1-800-361-8388; www.asolo.org.
