SIGNINGS: Two Shorecrest football players have signed to play in college.
Jeff Ritch, a linebacker/running back, has signed with Richmond (Va.), a Division I-AA school. Ritch was a second-team All-Pinellas choice by the Times last season after rushing for 871 yards on 107 carries (8.1 average) and 12 touchdowns. Ritch also caught 15 passes for 315 yards, and his 17 total touchdowns and 104 points were third-best in the county.Jeremy Bofman, a two-way lineman, has signed with Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, a Division III school. Bofman was an honorable mention All-Pinellas choice by the Times.
Also, Shorecrest's Jeff Malley, a quarterback/kicker, will be a preferred walk-on at Miami. Malley was an honorable mention All-Pinellas choice by the Times after completing 39 of 73 passes for 732 yards with 6 interceptions and 4 touchdowns.
David Guild, a wide receiver for Gibbs, has signed with William Penn University, a Division III school in Oskaloosa, Iowa. An honorable mention All-Pinellas choice by the Times this season, Guild caught a team-high 33 passes for 390 yards (11.8 average) and 5 touchdowns.
Lexi Roegiers-Jensen, a guard for the Pinellas Park basketball team, has signed with Methodist College, a Division III school in Fayetteville, N.C. An honorable mention All-Pinellas choice by the Times this season, she averaged a team-high 15.4 points a game.
BASKETBALL: The Clearwater Green Wave under-16 team recently won its sixth consecutive AAU state title in Orlando, rallying from a 15-point deficit to defeat the Orlando Warriors 76-73 in the final. A driving three-point play by Boca Ciega's Kelcey Roegiers-Jensen with 15 seconds left put the Green Wave ahead 76-73, and the Warriors missed a two-point shot on their final attempt.
"The key was definitely the defense," coach Sheri Sherpf said. "We just started doing a better job of denying the ball."
The Green Wave won three regional games to reach the state tournament, and it won three games to advance to the final. It had defeated the Warriors by 18 points earlier, but the Warriors came through the losers' bracket to reach the final. The Green Wave and Warriors both advanced to the national tournament July 6-14 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
The Lake Vista Spartans 14-and-under boys team placed third in the state tournament recently at Disney's Wide World of Sports. It will participate in nationals June 27-July 4.
