Women rule in Parkview tourney
By ANTONYA ENGLISH © St. Petersburg Times, published May 25, 2000 Women dominated the Parkview Lanes May Mixed Doubles Tournament last weekend, winning every pot and outscoring teammates. Three of the women -- Lois Driver, Dena Reeves and Della Schreiber -- also bowled 300 games in the nine-pin, no-tap event. Reeves also rolled a 297 in the tournament and Mona Rosado had a high game of 275. Dick Lenzen represented the top men's bowlers by winning the Crazy Eights competition, closely followed by Robin Budd, Liz Huxley and Richard Nelson. The mixed doubles tournament was won by Driver and her partner, Joe Simmons, with a 449 in the final game. Budd and Mike Rao earned second place and Schreiber and Gordy Weiss finished third. The June Mixed Doubles Tournament will be at 4:30 p.m. on the 25th. FOCUS ON YOUTH: Manatee Lanes is sponsoring four leagues or special activities designed to keep children busy this summer and heighten their interest in bowling. The YABA Handicap League for Youth Bowlers, consisting of four-person teams, will meet next Thursday at 6:30 p.m. and will bowl at 6:30 p.m. every Thursday beginning June 8 for 10 weeks. Participants will receive a choice of awards or scholarship money. The cost is $6.50 per person, per week, and fees include a free pizza and awards party on the final day Aug. 10. For those in search of an activity on Saturday afternoons, there is the Saturday Afternoon Vertiglow party, which will feature bowling from 3-5 p.m. along with laser lights and music from Rock 300. Families are welcome to attend. The cost is $5 per person and includes shoe rental and a chance to win prizes. Sundays at Manatee Lanes will feature two youth-oriented activities. The Fun Rollin' Adult-Youth League will have teams of one adult and one youth competing every week at 6:30 p.m. except for June 4, when they will bowl at 5:30 p.m. The league will bowl 11 weeks, with the exception of July 2, and ends on Aug. 20. First-time youth bowlers will receive an engraved bowling ball and all others will receive awards or scholarship money. The cost is $13 per team, per week. After the Sunday league bowling, there will be Youth Night from 9:15 p.m. until midnight. The lounge will be closed during this time and a uniformed deputy will be on site to provide security. Children under 16 must be signed out by an adult in order to leave the building. The first Youth Night is June 4 and is free to all participants. All subsequent nights are $6 per person. The fee includes unlimited bowling, rental shoes, contests, prizes, pool and dart tournaments and the music of Rock 300. For more information about any of the programs, call (352) 795-4546.
