TOWN 'N COUNTRY -- Some time this summer, limousines will transport local teens on a fun-filled scavenger hunt.

The event, for which a date has not been set, represents the combined efforts of the county Parks and Recreation Department and the Town 'N Country Park Home Owners Civic Association. The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is providing $3,600 in funding through a community enrichment grant.

Participation is open to members of area teen programs, such as the civic association's children's advisory board and at the Jackson Springs Recreation Center. Other teens also are welcome.

"We got a letter from the Sheriff's office telling us the community grant was available, we applied for it and got the award," said Rob Gamester, president of the civic association. Gamester is working with Harold Jackson, the parks department's area supervisor, to plan the limousine event.

"We've done three of these types of scavenger hunts before in Hillsborough county," Jackson said. "Basically, there's a $10 per child entry fee for the chaperoned teams of children who want to participate. We use the money to defer the cost of the limos or have food and entertainment for the kids."

Teams will scour the Town 'N Country area in search of items from a master list. They can win by finding the most items on the list. Or, as in past events, they might be directed to stop at a local recreation center and play basketball for points. "It's a fun filled event," Jackson said.

Gamester said he expects about 150 young people, ages 13 to 18, to sign up for the scavenger hunt. The grant money will enable the civic association to hire about 20 limousines.

Those interested in helping or participating can call Jackson at 813-975-2160.
