Late TD lifts Tigers past Terriers

Jesuit's score and two-point conversion gives it an 8-7 win, and Chamberlain rolls past Wharton 20-7.

TAMPA -- Defense, a big running day and a late comeback highlighted the spring jamboree Thursday at Hillsborough High.

Behind the running of Eddie Ivery and a strong defense, Chamberlain topped Wharton 20-7. In the second game, Hillsborough fell prey to a late touchdown, losing to Jesuit 8-7.

An early miscue potentially cost the Terriers points when running back Ronnie McCullough fumbled at the 13-yard line. Jesuit defensive back David Ochotorina scooped up the ball and raced all the way to Hillsborough's 18-yard line.

The Hillsborough defense clamped down, however, and kept the Tigers out of the end zone.

The Terriers didn't make the same mistake the next time they had the ball, driving 55 yards before quarterback Ian McAllister dived in from 1 yard out to score.

A series later, the Tigers marched down the field behind the passing of Anthony Severino and the running and catching of tailback Aaron Fryer. With 18 seconds left in the game, Fryer scored on a 4-yard run.

Going for the win with the two-point conversion, Severino connected with Shane Robinson. In the early game, Ivery ran for 59 yards and a score for Chamberlain, which dominated Wharton.

In addition to Ivery, Chamberlain quarterback Sidney Bryant completed 6 of 12 passes for 77 yards and had scoring passes of 21 and 14 yards.

The Chiefs' defense was equally strong, sacking Wharton quarterback Ross Corcoran five times and harassing him throughout. The Wildcats did end the evening on a positive note, however, as Corcoran hit Brandon Rice on a 40-yard touchdown pass.
