UF tells NCAA of possible violation

School's investigation into gambling allegations is "eligibility'' related.

As a matter of procedure, the Florida athletic department has notified the NCAA of a possible violation regarding gambling by a student-athlete.

Published reports link basketball player Teddy Dupay to two ongoing investigations, one by the school into a possible violation of the student-conduct code and one by the University Police Department into allegations of minor gambling infractions by a student-athlete.

There is no timetable for either investigation.

"We are confident the university will conduct a thorough review and provide the NCAA with a report at the appropriate time," the NCAA statement issued Thursday said. "This review of information would be a student-athlete eligibility issue, not an investigation of the university's athletics program."

According to NCAA legislation adopted last year, a student-athlete who participates in any organized gambling activity will lose at least one year of eligibility. Such a penalty would end the career of Dupay, a senior guard from Fort Myers.

The institution would come under NCAA scrutiny only if it were discovered staff members knew, or should have known, of the violation, but failed to act.
