A Memorial Day bash takes place this weekend at Rock Crusher Canyon, featuring a cookout and a tube race on the spring-fed lake, along with music and food.
The activities begin today with the Daily News Oldies rock 'n roll show at the Garden Pavilion, 275 S Rock Crusher Road.
The Daily News is a high-energy dance band that plays light rock and pop. The music is from 7 to 10 p.m. and a buffet dinner is served from 6 to 8 p.m. Admission is $15.
Saturday features "beach music" performed at the pavilion by Kokomo, an Orlando band.
Kokomo band leader Jim Raft says the group loves to play music by The Beach Boys, Jimmy Buffett, K.C. & The Sunshine Band, along with classic pop tunes.
The band dresses in colorful beachwear and strives to get the audience involved.
"We just try to figure out what kind of music works best for them, and then play it so everyone can enjoy the party," Raft said.
Kokomo, which also performs under the name The Malones, has entertained at area venues since 1973, Raft said. The band has played at Disney World and other major attractions, and some members also work as session musicians for television commercials.
Kokomo performs from 7 to 10 p.m., and a themed buffet dinner is served from 6 to 8 p.m. Admission is $15.
On Sunday, the party moves over to the cool, spring-fed lake. Activities there will include a cookout with a menu of sausage, peppers, and onion hoagies, barbecued chicken, hamburgers, corn on the cob, watermelon and salads. The cookout will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Cost is $10. Tubes will be provided for the *race.
