A bank surveillance photograph and an anonymous tip led authorities to a Manatee County man who has been charged with committing six bank robberies.

Ulysses Strong, 45, of Palmetto told detectives after his arrest Wednesday night that he liked to live "the high life" with the take from his holdups, according to Pinellas County sheriff's Deputy Cal Dennie.

In the past six weeks, the proceeds, including money from three robberies in Pinellas, amounted to more than $22,000, records show.

"He liked to party," Dennie said. "He told detectives he was living in hotels and going back and forth to Miami."

Strong was arrested at a St. Petersburg motel after St. Petersburg police, the FBI, sheriff's detectives and Clearwater police developed information based on a photograph taken during a Clearwater robbery and from a tip, he said.

Charged with six counts of bank robbery, Strong was being held Thursday at Pinellas County Jail on $450,000 bail.

Also arrested was Bruce Street, 34, of 1023 Locust St. NE in St. Petersburg. He was charged with being a principal in bank robbery. He was being held on $50,000 bail.

Street is accused of driving the getaway car, a maroon Honda, after a robbery Monday at Regions Bank at 3630 U.S. 19 N in Palm Harbor, Dennie said. That is the most recent robbery Strong is accused of committing.

In all six holdups, the robber gave bank tellers a note demanding money. The note implied he had a gun and would shoot if the teller did not comply, but no gun was seen. He got $14,000 in a robbery at a Sarasota bank and smaller amounts in other holdups.

In addition to the Palm Harbor robbery, others in Pinellas happened May 17 at the First Union at 2140 Gulf-to-Bay Blvd. in Clearwater and May 1 at the First Union at 2001 49th St. S in Gulfport. Strong also is accused of robbing two banks in Manatee.

Strong has been convicted of bank robbery in the past and served a 15-year sentence, according to Dennie.
