Jaguars sign receiver Dawkins
JACKSONVILLE -- The Jaguars added depth at receiver, signing free agent Sean Dawkins to a one-year contract Wednesday.
The Seattle Seahawks released Dawkins for salary-cap purposes in March, and the Jaguars signed him to a cap-friendly deal worth a reported $1-million, including incentive bonuses.
Dawkins started all 16 games for the Seahawks last season and led them with 63 catches for 731 yards and five touchdowns.
"We felt we needed veteran help at that position, and Sean will come in here and compete for a job," coach Tom Coughlin said. "He is a big man who can perform very well in the red zone. He has had some big games and has caught the ball under pressure."
The Jaguars held one of their nine off-season practices Wednesday. Absent was linebacker Lonnie Marts -- a probable sign that he will be released June 1 for salary-cap reasons. Coughlin wouldn't discuss the reason for Marts' absence.
DOLPHINS: Because of the realignment for the 2002 season, Miami might develop a legitimate intrastate rivalry with Jacksonville. As a concession to Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver, commissioner Paul Tagliabue is expected to encourage the Dolphins and Jaguars to begin playing exhibition games.
"I think (the NFL) will make it work," Weaver said. "Does that mean if we want Miami next year, we will get them next year? Maybe we get them in the second or third year. But we'll get them."
Dolphins president Eddie Jones said Tuesday he hadn't been approached by anyone from the league office telling him plans were in motion for a Dolphins-Jaguars exhibition game. The NFL declined to comment.
