West wins 7-4 in error-filled game

NEW PORT RICHEY -- The enemy was within for some players in Wednesday's Sunshine Athletic Conference all-star game at River Ridge.

Enemies became teammates in the conference's first East-West game since 1995, but the real enemy turned out to be the gloves of a few players. The all-stars combined for six errors and seven wild pitches in the West's 7-4 win.

Zephyrhills' Graham Taylor made two miscues -- a dropped fly ball at second base and a muffed grounder at shortstop -- only to redeem himself by going 3-for-4 at the plate and scoring one of the game's two earned runs.

The comedy of errors notwithstanding, Ridgewood coach Larry Beets took pleasure in defeating an all-star team that featured two teams -- regional semifinalist Land O'Lakes and state semifinalist Zephyrhills -- that went deep into the post-season.

"Any time you show up you want to win," Beets said.

"They had a lot of talent on that team, but we pulled it through," said River Ridge's Billy Evers, who scored twice for the West.

Land O'Lakes' Derrick McNeil, who had two hits and made an error, said he would remember teaming up with former foes more so than losing his final high school game.

"I'm sad, but it was the last time I'm going to face these guys," McNeil said.

"I'm going to miss this," he added, looking around the empty field afterward. "The atmosphere; playing with all these all-stars."

River Ridge's Chris Langlois earned the win for the West team that included Gulf, Hudson, Ridgewood and River Ridge.

Derek Thompson of Land O'Lakes took the loss for the East, made up of players from Land O'Lakes, Zephyrhills and Pasco.

Eric Shafer, a former Land O'Lakes catcher, showed up to watch his brother, Kurt, a Land O'Lakes pitcher.

Said the elder Shafer, who starred at Saint Leo this season: "I wish they had this when I played."

Eric Shafer graduated in 1997, one of two seasons since 1995 that a conference all-star game did not take place.
