INVERNESS -- A truck pull Sunday at the Citrus County Fairgrounds will provide entertainment and help raise money for scholarships.

The truck pull, which begins at noon, will feature pick-ups and other trucks pulling the same sled used in the recent tractor pulls.

"It will be a little different than a tractor pull, because truck pulls are quicker, but it will be the same sled," said David LaPerle, a member of the Citrus County fair board and organizer of the truck pull.

The object of a truck pull is to pull a weighted trailer, known as a sled, across the floor of the livestock arena. The sled tends to dig in as the pull progresses, causing the truck to lose traction.

The money from the truck pull will be used for scholarships awarded by the Citrus County Fair Association.

Last year, the tractor pulls generated enough money for the fair association to award three $500 scholarships.

"What we plan to do is add this money on to the tractor pull and award even bigger scholarships," LaPerle said.

Tickets at the gate, which opens at 11:30 a.m., are $5 for adults, $3 for kids ages 6 to 11. Children 5 and younger are free. There are no advance sales. There will be hamburgers, hot dogs and soft drinks for sale.

LaPerle said the truck pull will feature local residents.

"There's no cash prizes or anything like that. It's just for bragging rights," he said.

Seating will be provided for 400 spectators, with bleachers in the pit area and others at the grandstand, but there is extra room for those who bring their own chairs. Call 726-2993.
