LARGO -- Investigators have found the vehicle that they think was involved in a hit-and-run crash May 18 in which a bicyclist was killed.

Acting on an anonymous tip, investigators on Friday found the maroon 2000 Grand Cherokee Laredo in a Daytona Beach body shop. Police impounded the vehicle, which forensic investigators were testing for evidence Thursday.

Police think the vehicle struck Stephen Gunter, 39, on the night of May 18 as Gunter pedaled his bicycle across Belcher Road just north of Ulmerton Road. The driver of the vehicle left the scene. Investigators have talked with the vehicle's owner but had not determined who was behind the wheel when Gunter was hit, said police spokesman Mac McMullen.

McMullen said he could not release the name of the owner because of an ongoing investigation. Police were able to determine the make and model of the hit-and-run vehicle from a piece of the mirror that broke off the vehicle. That piece included a part number. Police took it to a dealership and determined the type of vehicle from which it came.

Anyone with information about this crash is asked to call Largo police at 587-6730.
