Logging company owner files countersuit against county

INVERNESS -- Business owner Scott Adams filed a countersuit in circuit court Thursday against Citrus County, saying he has lost money because of the county's efforts to shut down his logging operations on County Road 486 over a permitting issue.
The countersuit does not specify the amount of money Adams seeks, but Adams said he has had to lay off about a dozen workers and has lost about $75,000 since the county won a temporary injunction forcing Adams to close his logging plant in March.
The county says Adams needs development permits because his business is a wood-recycling plant, but Adams says his business falls under the permit exemption for silviculture.
The court has ordered Adams, a candidate for County Commission, and the county to go through mediation. If those efforts fail, the county's case against Adams could go to trial as soon as July.
