Letters to the EditorsPlease don't change a thing about The Pier
© St. Petersburg Times, Having grown up in St. Petersburg since 1956, I have seen many changes in The Pier over the years. I have been impressed with the conditions of The Pier and management over the last few years, and I would like to see it remain exactly the same. One of the top priorities for our out-of-town guests is a visit to The Pier. Even our married children, who come back to town occasionally, frequent The Pier. Our daughter, a senior at St. Petersburg High, and 14 of her friends went there on prom night and she visits there sometimes on weekends. One of the appealing aspects of The Pier is that it seems to attract a variety of people of all ages. From fishermen, families, dating couples and the elderly, everyone seems to be able to find something to enjoy, eat or buy at The Pier. Why make it another mall or set of franchised stores? The uniqueness of this attraction is what draws people to it. I recently visited The Pier on a Wednesday afternoon (during our tourist season). There was a group of musicians called the Downtowners who were performing on the first floor. There were approximately 200 seniors dancing, singing, eating, visiting and basically enjoying themselves. It was so good to see these people out having a good time and laughing. Along came a family with small children who joined them on the dance floor. Later a group of high school-age young adults came in and started putting on a swing dance show for everyone. How can we compete with this type of joy and clean, good times? And why would we want to? I implore St. Petersburg officials, please keep The Pier just as it is. The management seems to be doing a great job luring people of all ages, cultures and social backgrounds.
Downtown needs St. Peter's Cathedral I want St. Peter's Cathedral to remain a part of our downtown community. I became a member there in 1958, and its ministry is needed in the heart of St. Petersburg.
Memorial Day service was special Thanks to all the people involved in the Bay Pines Memorial Day service, from the Boy Scouts to musicians, singers and speakers. A special thanks to Congressman C.W. Bill Young, who is always there for the veterans and their families.
