Now that Memorial Day has come and gone, we all can break out our white shoes and linen dresses, and just in time since I, for one, was getting awfully tired of wool blends. Another harbinger of summer was the cocktail party Thursday given by and for sustaining members of the Junior League of St. Petersburg and their guests, a sort of goodbye to the year before many members leave for cooler climes and family vacations.

Delaying her trip for the party was Judy Stanton, who planned to head up to her house on Blue Run in Dunnellon the next morning. Frances Glisson and John Doyle will depart soon for Scotland, by way of a two-week trip through Ireland. Their wedding is scheduled for June 25 at Craig Millar Castle in Edinburgh. And Ardith Rutland and Dr. Norval Marr soon will be waist high in waders and cold water on their fishing trip to Utah's Green River in the Flaming Gorge Reservoir. Mrs. Rutland said the only time she has tried fly-fishing was "when I took Thomas (her now-adult son) to Lake Maggiore when he was little." It all sounds very exciting.

Cindy Weatherby and Parsla Mason discussed Mrs. Weatherby's recent trip to India (and she wore a wonderful visual aid, a yak bone necklace purchased in Nepal), and Harriet Dyer is here from Wisconsin (husband David heads up Land's End there) and plans to spend a good part of the summer here at the family's Florencia condominium.

Also in the crowd were Tom and Susan Wallace; Fay Nielsen; Elithia Stanfield; Bill and Kathy Stover; Dennis and Ginny Sexton; Jo Rowe; Mary Love Egerton, passing around some adorable photos of her great-grandson; Dale Synhorst; Stan and Iris Salzer; Jeanne Tucker; Janet Raymond; Harriet Strum; Royce Haiman; Steve and Nancy Thomas; Tilly and Suzanne Earle; Jack and Donna Painter; Fran Risser; Chris and Martha Little; Suzanne Clark; Dr. Dave and Fran Davis; Cary Bond Thomas; Brent and Susan McLean; Bill and Sandy Bozeman, in a lovely lavender pantsuit and white socks because "I broke my toe," she said; Dr. David and Marilyn Hobbs; Bill and Carol Ann Rhodes; Mary Wyatt Allen; Tim and Ange Bogott; Bill and Marion Ballard; Linda Earle; Jim and Helen Lyle; David and Lynn Cox; Hadley Heindel; Bill and Kally Harvard; Norma Jean Harris, in a beautiful silk jacket with cut-work embroidered in black; Barbara Smith; Bo and Betsy Godbold; and Dr. Terry and Lynn Tanner.

A special thanks to Carol Piper, longtime sustaining officer, for heading up the party committee. It was fun.

New officers were installed at the Florida Orchestra Guild. Outgoing president Mary Shuh passed the gavel to new president Charlotte Krizek, and not a moment too soon since Mrs. Shuh and husband Fred have a summer full of European travel planned. Greta Meyers is president-elect; Edie Spies is first vice president; Sally Poynter, second vice president; Rosemary Johnson, third vice president, Jan Green, treasurer; Barbara Sterling, assistant treasurer; Eleanor Myers, recording secretary; and Terry Ray, corresponding secretary.

Glamorous nuptials took place recently in Islamorada in the Keys. Peter Hawkins, formerly of St. Petersburg, married Laurie Allen on May 19 at Cheeca Lodge. Emily Hawkins, the groom's mother, reported that the intimate event was mostly family (the bride hails from Miami), and included a seated dinner by candlelight on the beach. Mrs. Hawkins' goddaughter, Lynn Harrison, accompanied her, and John Stovall, a member of another prominent local family, performed the ceremony. The couple now make New York City home base. He is a documentary filmmaker who has worked with Jane Goodall and the late Audrey Hepburn; her background is in television production and she now is an assistant to actor Christopher Reeve and his wife, Dana.
