Commission bans sale and use of fireworks

The Hernando County Commission met Tuesday and took the following action:

Implemented an immediate ban on the sale and use of fireworks in the county. Commissioners said they will consider lifting the ban when the threat of brushfires diminishes. Representatives from Galaxy Fireworks opposed the move and threatened legal action.

Approved changes to the occupational licensing ordinance to make clear that when customers apply for occupational licenses they also must meet all zoning and land-use regulations for their businesses.

Referred an emergency pay plan for exempt employees back to the county administrator for further refinement and review.

Approved a settlement agreement with Finest Farms Inc. relating to the company's payment of past fire-rescue assessments. The company had sued the county over the issue.

Hired Adams Engineering Associates Inc. to design the Weeki Wachee Preserve and Bayport Park for $225,000.

Recognized Irving Boettcher, 85, as Hernando County's Oldest Employee of the Year. Boettcher works at the Wal-Mart Super Center in Spring Hill.
