SAN ANTONIO -- After more than three years of planning and work, the city's public beach house on the shore of Lake Jovita should be open this summer, city Commissioner Sharon Madden said Tuesday.

Madden, who took up the project led by former Commissioner Lori Hillman when she left office, said work has progressed well this spring at the city-owned lakeside lot. Final landscaping and the addition of trash cans still remain, but the lake access should be ready for a grand opening in July or August, Madden said.

Most of the work has been paid for by a $50,000 state recreation grant.

The park is in the neighboring city of Saint Leo, but the access road, McMullen Drive, and 50 feet of lakefront property are owned by San Antonio.

The park has a dock, a small bath house and a patch of grass, offering the only public access to the lake shore.

Madden said she still is trying to find a reliable volunteer, or possibly an employee, to unlock the refurbished public restrooms each morning and lock them at night.
