Hernando players post wins in 2 junior eventsBy BRANT JAMES © St. Petersburg Times, published June 8, 2000 SPRING HILL -- Tara Allen of Brooksville shot an 86 Wednesday to win the age 12-13 girls division, and James McCarragher of Brooksville fired a 53 over nine holes to win the boys 10-11 title in the West Central Chapter Junior Golf Association's season-opening event at the Dunes Golf Club. Other winners were Zeric Hulvey (76), boys 16-17; T.C. Seibert (71), boys 14-15; Matt Jones (81), boys 12-13; Ian McConnell (57 over nine holes), boys 7-9; Rebecca Twiner (84), girls 18-20; Morgan Owen (85), girls 16-17; and Jenna Taylor (58 over nine holes), girls 10-11. Brooksville's Keegan Ledford shot an 83 to finish third in the boys 14-15 group. On Saturday at Silverthorn, Justin Greene and Joseph Costanzo, both of Spring Hill, won their age groups in the third event of the North Suncoast Junior Golf Association season. Greene fired a 98 in the 13-year-old boys advanced division, and Costanzo shot a 44 over nine holes in the boys intermediate 13-18 group. Brooksville's James Futrell was next behind Costanzo with a 54. Brooksville's RJ Chamberlin and Andrew Coogan tied for third in the boys advanced 14-year-old division at 83. Other county finishers were: Brooksville's Andrew Mallek (104), third in the boys advanced 13; Spring Hill's Julian Spinoza (54 over nine holes), third in boys intermediate 10-12. The NSJGA's next event will be the Ocala Open on Monday at the Country Club of Ocala. LET IT RIDE: Many area courses are limiting cart use to paths because of drought conditions and potential damage to fairways. Brooksville Golf & Country Club will not be among those courses, said head professional Paul Attard. "The fairways are starting to show a little stress," he said, "but our membership is mostly seniors. If they could not ride, they could not play. It's carts or no play at all." PGA PRO-AM: Jim Slattery shot a 67 Friday to win the Professional Division of the West Central Chapter PGA Pro-Am at the Dunes Golf Club. Jim Smith was second (68), followed by Dave Schaeffer (69), who helped his score with a double-eagle 2 on the par-5 fifth hole. Schaeffer used a 4-iron to sink the shot from 220 yards. TOMAHAWK CHIP: The Florida State Booster Club of Hernando County will hold a fundraiser June 10 at the Dunes. Play begins at 1 p.m. The four-person scramble costs $45 per player and includes cart and lunch. Contact Harry Timmons at (352) 683-5555 for information. SPORTS CAMPS: GlenLakes will host summer sports camps July 4-7 and July 25-28. The camps cost $125 per session and include one hour of golf instruction, one hour of tennis instruction and an hour of swimming per day. Contact Joey Ludeman at (352) 597-1118 for information. HOLE-IN-ONE: Clifford Vogel of Brookridge used a wedge to ace the 82-yard fifth hole at The Quarry on Monday. HEATHER LADIES: Corky Argue won the quirky "Predict Your Score" competition in the first flight of last week's Heather Ladies Golf League. Argue correctly predicted her score while Liz Gee, Marilyn Bunzel and Eileen Ball were off by one. In the second flight, Millie Karson and Alice Lemay hit their marks and Lee Faunce, Mary Porter, Rosemarie Wandel, Marian Jacobs and Stella Lamb were two strokes away. In the third flight, Ruth Taylor, Rose Hinson and Mary Loomis each shot a stroke over their predictions. THURSDAY MIXER: Rivard Golf & Country Club hosts a mixed scramble every Thursday at 12:30 p.m. Prizes are awarded to the top three finishers. Teams are drawn at the course. Cost is $20. Call Tom Austin at (352) 796-1410 for more information. -- Please send any golf results, announcements or tips to Brant James at brant@sptimes.com or by calling (800) 333-7505, extension 1430. © St. Petersburg Times.
