Couple hit by car hospitalizedBy Times staff writers © St. Petersburg Times, published June 8, 2000 CLEARWATER -- A couple hit by a car while walking along a Clearwater Beach street late Tuesday night remained hospitalized Wednesday. Winford Flener, 68, and Flossie Flener, 64, both of Louisville, Ky., were taken by helicopter to Bayfront Medical Center after the 11:55 p.m. accident Tuesday. According to police, both had serious leg injuries. He was in critical condition, and his wife was in serious condition, a hospital spokeswoman said. Police spokesman Wayne Shelor said the Fleners were hit by a car driven by Joseph E. Tracy, 18, of Dunedin. The investigation was incomplete Tuesday, and no charges had been filed. The Fleners were walking north side-by-side on the east side of Hamden Drive near Bayside Drive. According to Shelor, Flener was walking in the gutter. Mrs. Flener was walking next to him toward the sidewalk. Tracy was driving north on Hamden in a 1980 Toyota. The car drifted right toward the curb and hit the Fleners, he said. © St. Petersburg Times. All rights reserved. |
