Summer is the season for lots of weekend dance parties, particularly for teens.

For area teens who may be staying off the dance floor because they don't know how to dance, the East Citrus Community Center, 9907 State Road 44 E, Inverness, is offering free lessons for teens on June 16 and 23.

Mark Wilson, area dance instructor, will teach modern steps from 3 to 4 p.m. those days. The lessons cost $2 per session.

"The civic center is for everyone, not just senior citizens," said Jeanne Maroney, activities director at the center.

Wilson already teaches line dancing on Tuesdays; the Friday afternoon dance lessons are specifically tailored for a younger audience.

"He will supply the music, whatever it is they're listening to," Maroney said. "And he will teach them the dances they're doing in the clubs."

The civic center also will serve refreshments during the lessons, she said. No advance registration is necessary.

"Just show up, learn how to dance and have a good time," Maroney said.

Another dance opportunity for teens is at Club Excess, 3936 U.S. 19 S, Homosassa Springs. The club will have a Teen Night at 8 p.m. every Sunday in June. Cover charge is $5. Call 628-6329.

Manatee Lanes, 7715 State Road 44, Crystal River, has Youth Nights from 9:15 p.m. to midnight on Sundays. Activities include a music and laser light show to put a dance beat in the bowling games. Youth Nights are for ages 10 to 17. Admission is $6. Call 795-4546.
