Canterbury AD leaves; hoops coach followsBy PETE YOUNG © St. Petersburg Times, published June 9, 2000 After 13 years as the Canterbury athletic director and 30 years in teaching, Donna Gould is retiring. Her departure has led to another departure. Bruce Baudendistel has resigned as boys basketball coach at Canterbury after compiling a record of 57-66 in five years at the school. Baudendistel, 42, said he was disappointed Gould was being replaced by Dave Smith. "I enjoyed my time there, and I'd like to thank all my players," Baudendistel said. "If Donna Gould was still there, I'd be coaching still." Smith, 51, who was at Admiral Farragut from 1994-97 as a football and baseball coach and joined the staff at Canterbury last year, said he will be the new basketball coach. Smith was the junior varsity coach last season, and he also is the volleyball coach. "I'm going to be real busy," said Smith, who moved to the area in 1992 after 17 years as a teacher and coach in Michigan. "I enjoy coaching both sports." Gould, who taught in Kentucky and Connecticut before moving to Florida 13 years ago, thought she was done with teaching when she arrived in the area. Instead, she became a physical education and health instructor at Canterbury and the athletic director. "I was planning not to teach anymore. It took me 13 years," said Gould, who noted Canterbury's No. 9 finish in the state Class A all-sports standings this year as one of her proudest accomplishments. "It was wonderful. I'm leaving on a positive note." © St. Petersburg Times. All rights reserved. |
