Miami still on fire with 6th straight
FORT LAUDERDALE -- Diego Serna and Alex Pineda Chacon each scored two goals, leading the Miami Fusion to a 5-1 victory over the Kansas City Wizards on Saturday.
Miami won its sixth straight and extended its home winning streak to nine, matching the Major League Soccer record. The Fusion shares the record for consecutive home victories with Columbus (1996-97), Los Angeles (1996-97) and Colorado (1998-99).
The victory avenged Miami's only loss of the season, 2-1 at Kansas City on April 18.
Chacon and Serna each have eight goals this season.
Miami scored once in the first half and four times in the second.
Serna began the second-half scoring spree with a goal in the 49th minute. Chacon dribbled inside the penalty box area and passed to Jim Rooney, who delivered a one-touch feed to an open Serna. Serna dribbled inside the 6-yard box and flicked a shot past Wizards goalkeeper Tony Meola.
DALLAS 3, D.C. 0: Bobby Rhine scored and had two assists as the host Burn handed United its franchise-record fifth straight loss.
Dallas got first-half goals from Ryan Suarez and Rhine.
Suarez scored the first goal and his first of the season in the 18th minute on a pass from Rhine from about 5 yards into the left side of the net. Jason Kreis also got an assist.
NEW ENGLAND: Keeper Juergen Sommer will miss the rest of the season after surgery to repair a ruptured left Achilles' tendon. Sommer, a member of the U.S. national team, was hurt Friday during training.
SAN DIEGO 3, BOSTON 1: Shannon Boxx scored on a header in the 68th minute to lead the host Spirit, which broke a three-match losing streak. San Diego, which had been shut out four times, including twice in its last three matches, had its season high in goals. Traci Arkenberg's goal during stoppage time in the first half tied the scored at 1 and broke San Diego's scoreless string of 145 minutes.
ATLANTA 2, WASHINGTON 1: Emily Burt and Kylie Bivens scored to lead the host Beat, which moved past Washington and idle Philadelphia into second place. Bivens scored the winner on a header off Cindy Parlow's chip pass in the 81st minute. Burt beat keeper Siri Mullinix one-on-one for the only goal of the first half. Mia Hamm tied the score in the 66th minute on a penalty kick.
